83. OLDIES BUT GOODIES

 

As with most buildings built in the 60's, the Malabar Jama-Ath Mosque (1963), is dressed in mosaic tiles. It was the 'in' thing than. Such 'dressing' is now considered retro, a work of art even, as each mosaic covered building never has the same decorative pattern. This is better known in the community as an Indian Muslim mosque. Malabar is a region in India's southwest coast

 

















This is the most revealing feature - the lotus design - long associated with the 1000-petal lotus of the crown chakra in Buddhism and Hinduism. 

This is a common decorative feature in older mosques in Indonesia and many older homes outside of the cities have a lotus bud design on their gates and fences. Once rebuilt, such designs are never incorporated into the new mosques as seen in Singapore and Malaysia and elsewhere I'm sure...

The Kallang River is looking good enough to swim in these days if it were'nt so busy with dragon boaters and canoeists. Great picnic spot
