251. MALACCA - ONCE MORE WITH FEELING

Every few years a return visit for a short escape is a good way to recharge the batteries.

Won't write much as previous posts to Malacca had some write-ups, so let the pics do the talking...this particular trip was a foodie trip with I, a food taster...'good choice', 'tasty but a mite salty' etc...

Had some good Chinese food in typical local restos in Malacca and Johor Baru...

Nice cafe - Baboon House - full of character. The onion soup was good.
The Heng Wah Kopitiam in Johor Bahru served up a good dumpling noodles, the kind of coffeeshop coffee I like and old world white bread toasted over charcoal fire...

My favourite eatery on this trip - Baboon House - for its jungle decor...it's a jungle in here!

Some restos with good meals...

Malacca River by night. There's a weekend night market that used to be crowded and vibrant with tourists from China, but this time round, it wasn't the case...

These glutinous rice dumplings are pre-order only, collect from this home...

Q for food as early as 5.30pm - the crab dish and a big head prawn dish atop a bed of vermicelli was good. It had an innovative fusion sauce with cheese in it, different, really tasty...reservation is a must...

This young busker plays a different tune...

The iconic Dutch buildings, the Stadthuys by night

Night lights from the topmost floor of a cocktail bar

It's been years since I visited the Portuguese Settlement...it's been updated...not bad. In between a brand new hotel with a colonial look, there are local coffeeshops serving Eurasian style 'Portuguese' food...

There's potential to turn this place into a happening location after Jonker Street and surrounds...
It's by the sea - the night breeze is pleasant...it has a village air about it...the locals live in this vicinity running small businesses, chiefly food and drink stalls. Old and new side by side. I like to revisit in the near future...

The Malaysians have a sense of humour. This was a foot reflexology place...

...meanwhile, back in Singapore...

see too Post 248 - If not now when?

The Peranakan Mansion/Museum waited several years for this location to become available as the neighbourhood was perfect for its exhibits and to tell the story of the Babas and Nyonyas...it's privately owned by a Peranakan family...
For photography it was perfect too for the ladies who dress up for photo shoots...

Beaded slippers - a labour of love...
Learn it - at the Peranakan Mansion/Museum in Joo Chiat Road

It's rare to see Kuan Yin dressed in Peranakan colours...

Joo Chiat is so happening these days. Such a gracious neighbourhood that's full of character...
